How to build your own self-care routine that brings you peace

Self-care has been popularised in recent years. However, still so many of us don't make the time on a daily basis to take care of ourselves. Sometimes, it's because we haven't found the things that really work for us. Everyone is different, so in this blog post we have collected 10 different acts of self care that you can test out and add to your routine. 

Once you've tested out some, we recommend doing at least 3 of these things on a daily basis. Ideally in the morning is a great time to do them, as it sets you up for an amazing day! However you really can do them at any time of the day. The aim is to help reduce your stress levels and bring you peace, so do them in what ever setting and time brings you the most peace. 


Here's our top 10 self-care rituals to include in your day

1. Daily movement

This doesn't have to be an intense workout, it could be going for a walk in the sunshine, or doing yoga in your living room. Anything that moves your body and releases those feel good endorphins we all love!

2. Self-massage 

After a bath or shower, lather your body with oil or lotion and massage yourself. This is incredible for your muscles but also for your soul as you show each part of your body that you love it. Maybe you light a candle, or play your favourite music whilst you perform this ritual. Make a vibe and enjoy every second of it!

3. Skincare routine 

This may be as simple as using a cleanser in the shower and then moisturising your face afterwards. Like self-massage, your skincare routine is a way to show your body some love and to appreciate the skin you're in. 

It's also a great way to slow down as you can't be scrolling on your phone whilst you do this!

4. Dance to your favourite music

We all remember being a little kid and dancing around the house with no worries in the world. Recreate that feeling by putting on your favourite tunes and dancing around the house! If you want to make it a little sensual you could light some candles and dance naked as a form of self-love and appreciation for the body you're in. 

5. Journal

Journalling can be extremely transformative as you let your soul out onto a piece of paper. There are so many lessons we can learn from our own lives when we take the time to reflect and consciously think. You can also use journalling to help heighten your self-awareness as you let out your feelings, desires, and emotions that you may have bottled up for a long time. 

6. Meditate

Meditation is probably the best tool out there for grounding you in the present moment. As you focus on your breathing, your mind may wander, yet you are here now. You aren't comparing, you aren't fantasising. You are sitting in the present moment. The more you meditate, the more you begin to enjoy the process. If you have struggled with meditation or avoided it completely, this is your sign to give it another go. Find a comfortable spot on the ground with no distractions around you, set a timer on your phone for 5 minutes, then close your eyes and just breathe. The time will fly by!

7. Create some art

It could be a little doodle in a book, a painting, a song, or really whatever you like! The act of creating art helps you focus your attention on the present moment. It brings a sense of peace as you allow yourself to express your inner self with no constraints. Creating art is magical and I highly recommend you give it a go. 


8. Read a book

Reading a physical book requires your full attention. You can't be making your bed whilst you hold a book and read, or talking to a friend. It requires your undivided attention. Thus, helping to ground you in the present moment.

Pro tip: choose a relaxing book, or an educational book to help bring you to a calm state. A hectic action book or a scary thriller may not be the best choice for cultivating inner peace. But you do you!

9. Be in nature

Drive out of your suburb and into nature. Visit a national park. Walk barefoot on the beach. Visit a waterfall. Touch the leaves on your daily walk. Smell the roses (literally). Nature is so wise and effortlessly just IS. Learn from that and appreciate it!

10. Talk to yourself 

Stand in front of a mirror, look deep into your own eyes and talk loving words to yourself. Repeat your favourite mantras like "I am powerful" and "I am kind". Speaking directly to yourself in a positive way is extremely transformational. The way you talk to yourself matters BIG TIME and by saying loving words to yourself you are reprogramming your brain to love yourself more. 


I hope this post has given you some examples of rituals that you can incorporate into your daily routine! Choose one at first and try it out. If it feels good for you PRIORITISE it in your daily routine. You have the choice to create the life of your dreams and to love yourself in the process.
